The definitive basketball blog

I have decided to continue with Kobe, continue with our teammates and the fans of Los Angeles. While this may not be the most lucrative contract I’ve been offered this offseason, it is the most valuable. I am confident I will continue to lead this team on and off the court. Let the hunt for six begin.

The 2010 free agency

Following a disappointing 09/10 post season, Lebron James faced lots of questions about his future with the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team he’d played his heart out with for seven years since being drafted in 2003. Whilst facing some critizism throughout his time, mostly for his average midrange game and lack of defensive talent, Lebron stepped up each year to improve his team of, let’s be honest, average players to become playoff contenders, reaching a pinnacle in 2007 by becoming eastern conference champions before being sweep by the experience San Antonio Spurs in the finals.

Firstly, let me start by saying I respect Lebron’s decision to join the Heat, teaming up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh is a smart move for a guy who’s aspiration is to win an NBA championship, however, holding a nationally televised conference in Akron, Ohio, this I do not agree with. Despite the fact the ratings money will go to a boys and girls club charity, and despite the level of media interest and hype surrounding this decision I still think it’s unnecessary and disrespectful to Cleveland fans especially considering the implications of his decision to leave them.

Looking at what some of the ESPN analysts have said, they don’t even consider miami to be a top 3 team in the league, despite the level of talent the team now posseses, with Boston and LA still coming out on top in some rankings. This I agree with, despite their team usa experience together, the miami team as a whole still lacks depth with Mario Chalmers at the point and potentially Joel Anthony at the Center. Whereas both the Lakers’ and the Celtics have a deep team of experience veterans and quality bench and role players, whilst continuing to add depth in the off season (see Laker’s signing Steve Blake).

Other interesting free agency moves see the Knicks swapping out post stars, with key man David Lee going to Golden State, and the arrival of Phoenix Suns big man, Ama’re Stoudemire. Now i’ve always been a fan of Stoudemire, his intensity, drive and power have always been a thing of beautiful, Stoudemire was one of the players coming into the league following the Kevin Garnett mold, Athletic, yet rough fundamentally big men. These days college and high school teams are full of hyper athletic guards, forwards and even centres who come into the game and face extremely efficent fundamentally perfect guys like Tim Duncan and Ray Allen, and truely find out what it takes to make it in the NBA.

This years free agency has also seen a few high priced contracts being dished out for key guys, Joe Johnson and Rudy Gay of the Atlantic Hawks and Memphis Grizzles respectively getting handsome contracts.
